Blunt v. Blast & Recurrence Matters: The Future of mTBI Care is Happening Now

June 9, 2025

In the final installment of our series, Dr. Anne Naclerio sheds light on the future landscape of TBI care, driven by the advancements in biomarker research spearheaded by Polaris Genomics. She also extends a compelling invitation to investors and research partners to join them in this critical endeavor.

While pinpointing an exact timeline for a clinically available diagnostic tool is challenging, Dr. Naclerio anticipates significant progress within the next 5 to 10 years. The vision for such a tool is one of accessibility and practicality. Imagine a rapid, point-of-care test, using a blood or saliva sample, that could provide objective data about the presence and severity of a brain injury. This would move us beyond reliance on subjective assessments in determining the need for imaging, particularly immediately after the injury.

The widespread adoption of biomarker-based diagnostics could revolutionize TBI care within the next five years. For athletes, it could mean more informed decisions on the sideline, preventing premature return to play and mitigating the risk of second-impact syndrome. For military personnel, it could lead to earlier identification of blast-related injuries and provide objective data for decisions about returning to the fight. In the broader community, it could improve the diagnosis and management of TBI resulting from accidents and falls, leading to better outcomes and reduced long-term sequelae.

Dr. Naclerio emphasizes the potential for growth in the mTBI field, a market that is significantly larger than that of severe TBI due to the prevalence of sports-related concussions, accidents, and even subtle blast exposures. “It’s a huge field that is much less well understood, yet leads to significant morbidity in the US and abroad. Biomarkers have the capability of making these invisible wounds visible. I am hopeful that the use of genomic biomarkers is going to really take off in the next five years,” highlighting the timeliness of investing in this area of research.

For potential research partners, Dr. Naclerio extends a warm invitation to collaborate. “Anyone doing work in TBI, we’d love to hear from you. We’d love to partner and tell you more about our specific neuropsychiatric platform and what that can add to your research efforts,” she states. The unique and highly targeted nature of Polaris Genomics’ ADAPT Panel™, with its focus on sensitive and specific neurological markers, offers a powerful tool for advancing mTBI research across various populations and injury mechanisms.

Similarly, for investors, Dr. Naclerio presents a compelling opportunity to contribute to and benefit from this groundbreaking work. “It’s an exciting time to get in at the ground level as we rapidly accelerate,” she asserts, drawing attention to the potential for significant impact in a field ripe for innovation. The progress being made in biomarker discovery, particularly in the realm of mTBI, positions Polaris Genomics at the forefront of a transformative shift in brain injury care.

The journey to better understand and manage TBI is a complex one, but with the advancements in biomarker research and the dedicated efforts of companies like Polaris Genomics, the future of care looks significantly brighter. By embracing objective diagnostic tools and fostering collaboration, we can move beyond the limitations of current practices and pave the way for more effective interventions, ultimately improving the lives of millions affected by traumatic brain injury. Polaris invites you to be a part of this progress.
